we need to become
more of a "community" involving all (students, faculty and
staff) |
| 2 |
I believe Pitzer
College takes other factors into account and doesn't rely so
heavily on the SAT as do several other schools. At Pitzer, GPA
is of utmost importance as well as
extracurricular/volunteer/world-bettering activities. This is
good. |
| 3 |
The greatest
problem I see at Pitzer today is the large freshman classes
being accepted, with fewer students of any academic and
intellectual quality and, more importantly, PERFORMANCE. Not
only should Pitzer look at how a student has performed
academically and in community service at their High School,
Pitzer should be interested in what application any of that
has to their place as a student HERE! Students are coming in
with low GPA's, low test scores, and little or no interest in
becoming actively involved INTELLECTUALLY at Pitzer. I think
it's great that we've got a lot of students who are
politically involved in extra-curricular activities. What I
would like to see more of is academic clubs, and students who
want to make their political and social mindedness a part of a
greater intellectual and academic experience. Let's slim down
our incoming classes, and look more to the quality of student
being brought into our largely unacademic community.
|
| 4 |
Pitzer needs to
improve its reputation. The average SAT score of students
is one way to measure academic strength of a college, However
I think it is possible to raise academic standards at the same
time that we make the SAT optional. |
| 5 |
Pitzer is a school
that strives for diversity. It focuses on addessing problems
that students of color may face. It seems fitting that a
school like Pitzer would want to abolish the SATs because it
recognizes the flaws and inherent discrimination. However, as
I have already mentioned, I do not beloeve that it is the best
interests of the school or even the students to abolish the
SATs. It is just part of the admission process, it is not
everything. |
| 6 |
I feel Pitzer
continues to move in the correct direction in terms of
academics, asthetics, and in trying to increase student
retention. However much more must be done, and the
administration must be more willing to work with students on
issues prevalent and important on this campus. |
| 7 |
Pitzer fortunatly
does not focus upon SAT scores in comparrison to other schools
(specifically large unviersities). I would strongly support
the abolishment of SATs if there were a larger percentage of
schools who were doing the same thing |
| 8 |
I think Pitzer
should put more emphasis on writing skills in the admissions
process. Writing is the most important, intelligent expression
of excellence and Pitzer should place heavy emphasis on
writing skills. Also, Pitzer needs to consider that many
people who do well on SAT's are people who excell in life. It
is true that the SAT discriminates against some students, but
some students do very well on the SAT. Pitzer needs to find a
way to attract the all-around excellent student and unique
individual in order to advance the academic cirriculum at
Pitzer. |
| 9 |
We need to be more
of the liberal arts college (as opposed to a social and
behavioral science school) we were -- and are -- chartered to
be, and we need a larger faculty. |
| 10 |
we should have
more of a diverse student body, less drugs/drinking
|
| 11 |
There needs to be
less drama. People here are so fucking sensitive. It drives me
crazy. Mind your own business, do your own work, change the
world the way you want to. |
| 12 |
i think that there
needs to be more of a focus on activities and student
participation. while there are activities on campus, for some
reason student choose not to participate, ever. they gripe and
whine about activities, yet they absolutely refuse to make
suggestions. pitzer is small enough that if even one person
wants to plan, or go on an event, it is definitely possible
with a suggestion to the right people, who are also students,
and who are very approachable. |
| 13 |
I like pitzer. I
don't like the inherent flaws in the SAT, but I do think that
they are better than nothing. |
| 14 |
I am very fond of
Pitzer and its commitment to social change. I think it would
be remarkable if Pitzer took the first step in ridding itself
of one of the many barriers that exist when applying to
college. Institutional racism is still strongly apparent in
our institution and changing the admissions guideline would
greatly affect our reputation in a positive light.
|
| 15 |
none, thanks
|
| 16 |
It is obvious to
all that there is definitely a need for diversity on this
campus, not just racial but economic as well. I don't know how
true this is, but I once heard someone say that whenever the
school needs money they admit "a bunch of rich white kids that
can pay full tuition w/o financial aid." Sounds possible, who
knows? |
| 17 |
I think the most
important thing to consider in the SAT debate here at Pitzer
is the way that it is used in the admissions process. The SAT
is not given such weight that it is considered more than other
factors and therefore despite its imperfections is better than
giving any other factor undue weight. |
| 18 |
Pitzer is entirely
too "kick-back;" I think most students here are allowed to get
away with way more (e.g. late assignments, not enough
assignments, etc.) than the other Claremont Colleges.
|
| 19 |
I think that
Pitzer College is hard to get into. But it shouldn't be hard
to get into because they chose to go by S.A.T. scores.
|
| 20 |
We have a lot to
gain from abolishing the S.A.T. It is an opportunity to
increase rankings, selectivity, and a fairer admission
criteria. |
| 21 |
i've enjoyed my
time here at pitzer, especially the freedom to take advantage
of the entire 5-c community. |
| 22 |
When I applied to
Pitzer I really liked the criteria with its heavy focus on a
person's independent motivation to learn and not just on
scores. |
| 23 |
Pitzer is only a
small part of college education and many people come here
because of Pitzer approach to humanity, diversity, and freedom,
but we must continue to support some standard of testing
throughout the whole college system for these are the
bootstraps that helps pull other along. |
| 24 |
Although we call
ourselves "diverse" the school is racially segregated by
social groups. What does diversity accomplish if it only
reinforces pretermined categories? How can we create an
environment that fosters interactions between people of
different backgrounds? |
| 25 |
PItzer needs to
develop more pretige and when selecting a college, students
look at test scores of colleges and compare with their own.
More socially aware activities, too many adminstrators, give
food workers a living wage! PItzer is ugly campus, but a nice
one! More free bands |
| 26 |
Pitzer is now a
good school. It can be better academically and ethically, and
we should work to improve it. |
| 27 |
can you please cut
down on the drugs?? it gets more and more ridiculous every
day. You are losing students because of it. I know people
planning to transfer because of the high incidence of drug
use. Regardless of pitzer's standpoint on drug use, this
is america, and these drugs are ILLEGAL; pitzer should uphold
the laws of america whenever possible, expecially when it
hurts other people when they're broken - some of my hallmates,
including myself, get sick from the smoke, many of us have
almost continuous headaches. it really sucks. I do not pay
this much money to get my lungs shredded or to be kept awake
all night by screaming girls. |
| 28 |
Be happy, love
lots. |
| 29 |
The slow service
of maintenance!!!!! There are three different broken things in
my room, one of which was reported to maintenance at the end
of September. I have called as well as talked to them in
person and it still isn't fixed! If Pitzer is going to charge
us for things being broken at the end of the year, they should
at least provide services to fix them in a somewhat speedy
manner. There are many students in my hall that have broken
screens or burnt out lights, not because they are lazy, but
because maintenance has failed to follow up and fix them. That
is not to say that maintenance does nothing, because they did
fix one thing and they raised my bed in a timely manner,
however, in general I think something needs be done to make
maintenance more effective, efficient and organized. Thank
you. |
| 30 |
I like Pitzer but
I think that there is entirely too much politics that go on.
The focus of the adminstration should be the student wishes
and welfare instead of their own bottom line. |
| 31 |
I absolutely love
it here! I could not feel more comfortable or more at home.
|
| 32 |
Pitzer College is
a great school, but I fear that eliminating the SAT will lower
our school's rankings for the worse. Our second tier
classification, will soon be a third one in the future. If
Pitzer ever wants to be in the same category as Pomona or CMC,
Pitzer must continue to use the SAT in admissions.

|
| 34 |
Pitzer sells
itself as a school that teaches students to be socially and
environmentally repsonsible. Pitzer's administration lacks of
social environmental responsibility. Pitzer has yet to fulfill
the image that they sell to others. |
| 35 |
We are a good
school. Some students take drugs and sell drugs and this makes
things really bad in the dorms for the majority of students.
|
| 36 |
Pitzer should do
what is just for society and be socially responsible no matter
how our image will look...at first. |
| 37 |
We need to work on
our freshman. We need to work on getting top students (both
academically as well as socially) here and keeping them here,
our retention rates suck. We need to have a better sense of
community, people need to take pride in our school and I think
that starts with teaching it to the freshman, all the vadelism
and lack of respect for the community that is Pitzer college
sucks, do something to create an environment students take
pride in. the administration should also try and stick around
a bit longer. In the 3 years Ive been here all of our deans
have changed at least once, we got a new president, and not
only do I not know who my hall directors are, but they have
definatly never been the same, I do know that. |
| 38 |
Pitzer had the
advantage of being a small school. It means that we have the
ability to examine a possible student in numerous facets. It
means the SAT's can be useful in determing admittance without
biasing against those with potential but poor scores. I think
the SAT's (and the GRE's for that matter) become more
questionable in larger schools that often use equations to
eliminate applicants. |
| 39 |
As a place that is
quirky and eclectic and experimental, Pitzer has a special
need to pursue excellence. It is so very easy for the
conventional places in this world--the Pomonas--to deride the
experimental, that we must protect the possibility of our
quirkiness and eclecticism--our queerness, if you will--by
being sure that our programs are unimpeachable in their
quality. The same argument applies if one shifts focus a bit
to look at Pitzer's admirable commitment to diversity. Nothing
will discredit the pursuit of diversity more quickly than its
detachment from the pursuit of academic excellence. In short,
all of the best things about Pitzer require a significantly
greater commitment to excellence than has been evident over
the last one to two decades.
|
| 40 |
We should work to
instill a stronger sense of academic responsibility in Pitzer
students. Whatever they choose to study, many of them need to
learn to do it more diligently. |
| 41 |
I would have
pre-college level math and science courses available for
students in order to bring theri abilities in the basics up
tot speed-Thus increasing the minority representation in
Medicine. |
| 42 |
The sat 2 are
still a good idea. |
| 43 |
Schools are "put
on the map" because their academics is really high, their
athletics is high, or both. Pitzer's S.A.T. scores are low,
and their athletics are not popular, so that pretty much puts
Pitzer in the "what?" categorie when it comes to telling
people where you go. I believe that if Pitzer wants more
presitge and wants to be looked at as better, they should take
part in more recruiting, they should make their campus more
diverse, they should make effort to help students who want to
get into Pitzer but don't have the qualities that it takes. If
Pitzer is all about improvement, they should improve
themselves first. |
| 44 |
We need more
students who have sensitivity to the nuances of language
and logic -- the S. A. T. I measures that -- AS WELL AS
more students who want to contribute in a positive way
to their own communities and to the communities of those
who have been screwed by our current social order.
Admissions should find as many people who do both
these things as possible. |
| 45 |
I love being here
at Pitzer, but I am aware that others are not. What ever the
reasons people are unhappy should be addressed. We need a
happy and contributing alumni. |
| 46 |
The essay, the
high school grades, the extra activities should be considered
the major deciding factors for admission. |
| 47 |
What Pitzer does
better than any other school that I know of, is to allow
students to find their own path, their own voice and truly
gives students the power to make the most of their own
education. This not only provides wonderful opportunities
within a learning environment, but also provides a measure of
responsibility and accountability akin to the professional
world. |
| 48 |
Pitzer has
horrible racism, sexism, homophobia even though we say we dont
have any. We need to address how our culture at Pitzer
operates to reinforce relations of privilege when it operates
AS IS. Our assets are student-teacher interaction,
outstanding possibilities for study abroad and social justice
projects. Our assets are also access to prestigious
fellowships. Excellent preparation for grad school.
|
| 49 |
Pitzer College
should not
Pitzer College should not tout
its Mother Jones activist award on one hand and deny the
cafeteria workers a just wage hike on the other. Pitzer should
not advertize itself as a model of diversity on one hand while
bypassing affirmative action hiring procedures in many staff
positions on the other.
|
| 50 |
Pitzer does a good
job at considering the student as a person and not a number. I
think their application process seems very fair. I think
students here have a very wide range of SAT scores.
|
| 51 |
Interviews ought
to be mandatory in the admissions process (they are currently
optional). If the SAT is a mandatory tool for determining
admission, then so should interviews. |
| 52 |
The drug abuse and
vandalism problems must be addressed. I am not sure how to do
this. Becoming more police-like doesn not seem to have worked.
Perhaps looking into community programs that have worked
elsewhere and changing them to fit Pitzer's culture might
work. Couldn't the student/faculty initiative funds be used to
conduct a study and program planning? This might be a great
project for organizational studies majors or public health
people??? |
| 53 |
we should do a
much better job of highlighting our academic resources. but
"excellence" is a riduculous measure to tout without
qualifying what that means--so i guess we need to do a better
job of articulating pitzer pedagogy/curriculum/faculty
resources in terms of their truly unique value without
downplaying a sense of academic rigor/"Excellence." our best
students came to Pitzer when they heard that message and made
it their own. |
| 54 |
Pitzer should try
to attract more academically inclined people. |
| 55 |
I think that
Pitzer should address the problem of places that they do not
look for admission and while i feel that we make and admirable
effort to reach out we just do not have enough staff to look
everywhere. |
| 56 |
Pitzer does a good
job of looking at much more than SAT scores when admiting
students. other private schools claim to do that but really
don't. because of pitzer's unique attitude in admissions they
have collected an interesting and interested group of people.
the campus would look very different if they didn't do that.
look at essays, extra-curicular activities, and grades. those
lead to more interesting groups of people. |
| 57 |
I, personally I
have had a horrible time at Pitzer, 2 out of the 5 semesters I
have been at Pitzer, I have not had an ID card, I have been
tossed out of my room by a fellow student, to live offcampus,
as a disabled student, I have had great difficulty recieving
accomidations at the school, I have not been able/allowed to
participate in school activities, and have been charged for a
meal card, I do not possess. |
| 58 |
incorporate into
our educations relevant to students of color, increasing and
maintaining diversity after acceptance |
| 59 |
Pitzer has been a
college different from all others and it needs to stay that
way. |
| 60 |
The nice people
|
| 61 |
Problems with
communtcation about happenings in the school should be
adressed. This maks me, for one, uncomfortable, i like to know
what is going on at the school I attend. I don't want
propaganda. I want both sides of a story and I want
communication. |
| 62 |
The small classes
are great, as are the professors. The workload could be more
challenging though. I work at least 25 hours per week, play a
sport, take five classes and still have plenty of time for
more work. |
| 63 |
I LIKE THE COLLEGE
AND MY MAJOR |
| 64 |
We need to improve
advising--if faculty do not have the time, then there should
be an academic advising office to assist.
To maintain
small classes, we need to increase the size of our
faculty--our student body has increased in size, but our
faculty has remained constant.
|
| 65 |
There needs to
more diversity on this campus, there is not enough! I would
also like to point out that the brochures Pitzer and the
Claremont Colleges put out are misleading. They make it seem
there is alot of diversity on campus but photographing all the
students of color and placing them in their brochures to
entice students. I felt I was lied to when I visted this
campus, but nonetheless i am recieving a good education.
|
| 66 |
I understand that
Pitzer is a very liberal college, and I understand that it
would like to give everyone admission regardless of their SAT
scores, which show who has had educational opportunities and
who has not, but this seems somewhat ridiculous. Just because
someone has not had the same academic opportunity as the rest
of us does not mean that they are qualified to attend Pitzer.
I would not want someone in my classes, bringing down the rest
of the students, because he/she does not have the same skills
and abilities. My parents are paying $35,000 so that I can
make the most of my education, this would not occur if my
classes had a bunch of kids in them whose skills and abilities
did not match up with those of the rest of the students in the
class. |
| 67 |
The Judicial
Comitee is very bright and they should control all the power
when discussing student's rights. |
| 68 |
Pitzer needs to
create a better community. We boast about our liberal
strengths and are ability to discuss matters freely and accept
different people into our community with relative ease. But at
the same time we also need to consider that alumni giving is
one of the lowest among liberal arts colleges simply because
many graduates feel no close connection to the college. Pitzer
needs to create traditions, positions, and endeavors of which
all students, past and present, can be proud. By creating a
strong community setting with frequent student, faculty, and
staff interaction outside the academic arena we can all
participate and take joy in all the things we like about
Pitzer College. |
| 69 |
I feel we should
continue to recruit strongly among all communities and raise
Pitzer's profile as a welcoming place for a diverse student
body. I particularly hope we continue Early Academic Outreach
and use our alumni network increasingly to reach out to
promising Pitzer students of all backgrounds and levels of
ability to pay. I feel that we should continue to strive to
remain a "selective" college; realize that we occupy a
specific niche in education that is highly vulnerable (small,
private liberal arts); and we should not mistake the
structural effects that occur in large data samples with the
very small pool we draw from and accept. |
| 70 |
Put words into
action. |
| 71 |
I love Pitzer
college, except the FOOD sucks. |
| 72 |
admissions should
be based on intellect, not wealth and privelege. the SAT
gauges intellect far better than GPA or what snotty high
school one went to. |
| 73 |
i think this is a
noble discussion to bring up and i am proud that pitzer is
engaging in it. pitzer's ideals are good ones, it is only a
matter of progressively changing to fit those ideals. once we
acknowledge the problems, lets think of ways to actively fix
them, not just keep talking about them, or take away options
without providing better ones in their place. |
| 74 |
THE DINNING HALL
WORKERS they need health care. i am sick of hearing pitzer
is a socially conscious school when people in our own
community are struggling to survive. if the pitzer college was
sincerely interested in supporting miniority students-and
students of color- people of color- if pitzer was really
socailly conscious we could be honest about what system we
live under and address those problems realistically. many
students of color feel tokenized and alienated. if we actually
make it here its a wonder why we dont all drop out just due to
the fact that we live in a predominantly white environment- an
environment where women, people of color, and queers are
repeatidly silenced. |
| 75 |
We have a very
bright set of students. continue what we are doing.
|
| 76 |
stop bullshitting
that we are sooo right on when a myraid of practises and
policies clearly illustrate we are not |
| 77 |
stop bullshitting
that we are sooo right on when a myraid of practises and
policies clearly illustrate we are not |
| 78 |
I think that SAT's
should be considered as one component of the whole package and
should be given a significant weight. I also think that Pitzer
should take more affirmative action to keep people of diverse
backgrounds to attend this college. This include offering more
financial aid and scholarships to these people. |
| 79 |
It is important
that our addmissions procedures are the best they can be and
that they are as unbiased as possible, but we should beware of
letting standards drop before taking this step. I do not think
abolishing the SAT is a bad thing at all nor do I think it
will hurt our image. We have allways had the image of an
alternative and activist college and this will only reinforce
that. It must not be a brash movement, though, the addmisions
department should have plenty of time to reorganize their
procedures so that there will be no glitches or temporary
lowerings of standards. |
